P. G. Wodehouse Books in Order

Here are all 100 book entries in this library, first on their logical shelves and then by this catalogue’s book year. The two lists contain the same entries. A first publication in a magazine, a revised regional text, or a later editorial collection can have its own separate date.

Which order should you choose?

My favourite way in is to pick a world rather than march from the earliest school story to a posthumous collection. For Jeeves, try Right Ho, Jeeves if you want a full novel or Carry On, Jeeves for shorter tales. For Blandings, Something Fresh opens the castle door. Psmith’s school beginnings and his arrival at Blandings make a satisfying miniature journey. The chronological list is valuable to watch the writing change over decades, but it is a bibliography route, not a demand made by the plots.

Within each shelf below, the order follows the catalogue’s book chronology. It does not claim that every character experienced events in exactly that order. Some series cross over, most visibly Leave It to Psmith and Uncle Fred in the Springtime at Blandings. The category “Standalones & Romances” is an editorial grouping of independent works, not a shared fictional saga. The Mixed Collections shelf needs extra care: a modern editor can bring older stories together much later than their first magazine or book appearance.

The year view sorts by the year recorded for each catalogue entry. Titles sharing one year are alphabetised as a navigation aid; no exact month/day sequence is implied. You will encounter early school books, later novels and posthumous or archival volumes beside the original series. Plum Stones is an umbrella guide to twelve separately titled booklets from 1993–95, not a claim that one book of that name appeared in 1993. The Luck Stone has a much earlier serial history than its later book publication. These distinctions are described in the individual book records.

British and American titles can differ, and the texts may have been revised. This list uses one preferred display title per entry; it does not count alternate titles as additional books. A collection’s regional contents can also diverge. Open a book guide for its source-linked publication events, UK/US notes and any identified contents. The edition glossary explains “first book,” “serial,” “omnibus” and “revised text.” Retailer recordings and reprints are products of a work, not additional first books in the historical order.

All 100 entries by series and reading shelf

The recurring series appear first, followed by editorial shelves. A link to each full series guide gives a gentler starting recommendation, character trails and source notes.

After the original books

Faulks and Schott wrote authorised Jeeves continuations after Wodehouse’s death. They have their own authors, editions and reading route, and are intentionally outside the 100-entry list above. For a quick first choice, visit the reading guides; for adaptations of these worlds, visit screen, stage and radio.

Non-fiction & Memoirs

Explore the non-fiction shelf: essays, theatre reminiscences, letters, autobiographical writing and collected verse. These six guides supplement the original 100-entry fiction catalogue; alternate editions are discussed within their guide.

Bibliography coverage audit

Comparison covers every one of the 99 rows in Terry Mordue’s summary bibliography, against the original 100 catalogue records. The detailed notes were also checked for regional distinctions. It is not a claim to enumerate every reprint or anthology ever issued. Mordue’s detailed page does not contain a complete B-series omnibus catalogue; the supplementary list below uses the Wodehouse Society’s resource list and the named additional records.

93 of the 99 summary rows matched existing guide titles. Six lacked their own record before this update:

The Parrot and Other Poems is an additional sixth new guide, drawn from supplementary bibliography sources. The two Prince and Betty entries share an existing guide which discusses their different versions; they are not counted as a missing novel.

Further titles without dedicated guides

These are supplementary collections, omnibuses, verse, letters or distinct versions. An absent omnibus page does not mean its component stories or novels are absent.

Sources: Mordue summary, detailed notes, Wodehouse Society resources and Huntington catalogue. The full row-by-row mapping is retained in the source documentation.

US collections and omnibus editions

The Crime Wave at Blandings is a US collection with materially different contents from Lord Emsworth and Others, rather than a simple interchangeable title. Check the contents of the edition you buy.

The Golf Omnibus gathers golf stories in one edition; it is not an additional novel or the next event in a fictional timeline. Compare its contents with The Clicking of Cuthbert and The Heart of a Goof before buying overlapping material. The same caution applies to other regional collections and omnibuses.
