P. G. Wodehouse UK and US Book Titles

The same Wodehouse work can stand on a British and an American shelf under different names. A matching title does not guarantee matching text or contents, and a related compilation is not automatically the US edition of a British book. This table cross-references all 100 entries in this library using recorded first regional book events.

Read the table before buying an edition

Each row begins with this library’s preferred book guide title. The UK and US cells show matched first regional books and their years where the research model has both events. An empty side is explicitly marked as no matched first regional book recorded; it does not assert that no copy has ever circulated in that country. The right-hand note says when two recorded first books have different titles and flags later editorial or archival entries. Open the linked book to inspect serial dates, revised versions and collection contents.

The obvious title pairs are worth learning. Something Fresh became Something New in its US first book, with material differences in the text. Right Ho, Jeeves became Brinkley Manor. Summer Lightning appeared as Fish Preferred. Ring for Jeeves has The Return of Jeeves across the Atlantic; its unusual Jeeves-without-Bertie cast remains a feature of the novel, whatever the cover says. The later Jeeves novels add Bertie Wooster Sees It Through, How Right You Are, Jeeves, Jeeves and the Tie That Binds and The Cat-nappers as American first-book names.

Collections are more treacherous than a simple renaming exercise. The US Blandings Castle and the UK Blandings Castle and Elsewhere are related but not identical first selections. The UK Lord Emsworth and Others and US The Crime Wave at Blandings overlap only partly. Some Young Men in Spats and Eggs, Beans and Crumpets selections also differ by region. A story may itself have another magazine title, then enter a collection with a changed heading. A contents list and a specific ISBN tell you more about what you will receive than an apparently familiar title.

The Psmith, Journalist relationship to the American The Prince and Betty is particularly complicated: substantial plot material was incorporated with a different Smith protagonist. The table does not pretend these are a matched pair of identical regional editions. Similarly, later anthologies, coauthored gatherings and the twelve Plum Stones booklets require their own editorial identities. A gap in a regional-event cell is a research limit or a genuinely different book relationship, not a blank invitation to invent a corresponding title.

What the year means

The dates above are first regional book years recorded in this library’s model. A serial might precede both, while a book could appear in one country in a later year. Later paperback and audiobook dates belong to the particular product, not to the first publication of the work. The broader 100-book order uses one catalogue year to place each entry in a readable sequence. Where exact book dates are known, the individual book’s publication panel records them with source precision; this table keeps only the year so its purpose remains cross-reference.

Not every US title translates an entire UK work. A short-story volume can borrow a famous story’s name while adding or subtracting others. Nor should an original novel be confused with a revised text, an omnibus or a posthumous editorial gathering. For a purchase, check the specific publisher, format, ISBN, contents and, if relevant, the text version named by the seller. For a listen, check narrator and track list as well. The audiobook guide links verified products and explains the difference between a prose reading and a drama.

As a fan, I enjoy seeing the alternative titles because they reveal how each side of the Atlantic introduced a book. As a reader buying a copy, I care even more about whether the words and story selection I expect are actually inside. The table is a doorway to that question, not a declaration that two spines with one title must be interchangeable. Please send a specific publisher record through the corrections route if an edition needs a more exact distinction.

Non-fiction & Memoirs

Explore the non-fiction shelf: essays, theatre reminiscences, letters, autobiographical writing and collected verse. These six guides supplement the original 100-entry fiction catalogue; alternate editions are discussed within their guide.

US collections and omnibus editions

The Crime Wave at Blandings is a US collection with materially different contents from Lord Emsworth and Others, rather than a simple interchangeable title. Check the contents of the edition you buy.

The Golf Omnibus gathers golf stories in one edition; it is not an additional novel or the next event in a fictional timeline. Compare its contents with The Clicking of Cuthbert and The Heart of a Goof before buying overlapping material. The same caution applies to other regional collections and omnibuses.
