Mr Mulliner
Mr Mulliner is the Angler’s Rest raconteur whose conversational openings reveal another astonishing member of the far-flung Mulliner family.
Who they are
Mr Mulliner is the Anglers’ Rest storyteller who can connect almost any conversational subject to an improbable experience of one of his relations. The first Mulliner story, “The Truth about George,” appeared in magazines in 1926 and is collected in Meet Mr Mulliner. The inn was not yet named in the earliest magazine framing; later versions regularised its familiar name. That small textual change is a useful warning against treating every edition’s introduction as identical to the first appearance. The books give his sprawling family a shared listening room without requiring its stories to happen in a strict sequence.
He is primarily a narrator, not the hero of every adventure he recounts. An idea from another customer becomes the occasion for an account of a nephew, cousin or more remote relation. Wodehouse can then visit a school, a film studio, a country house or a curious scientific experiment and still return to the pub’s comfortable rhythm. One is invited to believe that the family is inexhaustible. Mr Mulliner’s composure while relating an extraordinary event is itself a comic technique; he rarely pauses to admit that the tale asks rather a lot of his listeners.
Personality and relationships
The other drinkers at the Anglers’ Rest supply prompts, objections and the sense that a tale has a real audience. The voice is different from the Oldest Member’s golf instruction. Mulliner does not have to prove that all human experience reduces to a single sport; he has simply lived within reach of a family member for every theme. A relative’s professional ambition or romantic panic can be unfolded at length while the listeners remain in the bar. The framing makes each separate story easy to enter even if the reader has never met the named relation before.
Three principal original collections are Meet Mr Mulliner, Mr Mulliner Speaking and Mulliner Nights. Some subsequent mixed volumes include individual stories or frame appearances; their tables of contents vary across British and American editions. The linked book trail identifies volumes rather than asserting that every story in each mixed book belongs to the Mulliners. A later omnibus may be a useful way to read, but it is a reassembly of material whose first appearances and revisions need separate notes.
