Lord Tilbury
Sir George Pyke, Lord Tilbury, is a powerful publisher whose pursuit of valuable copy draws him into the Blandings orbit.
Who they are
Sir George Pyke, Lord Tilbury, is a publishing magnate whose desire for valuable copy can turn a private manuscript into a business target. He first appears in Bill the Conqueror, a 1924 novel with its own principal cast. Later he moves into the Blandings world, where Galahad’s Reminiscences promise the kind of sensation a publisher might covet and the family might dread. Treating him solely as a castle guest misses his independent publishing history; treating Heavy Weather as a sequel to Bill the Conqueror would be equally misleading.
Wodehouse knew newspaper and magazine publishing from his own career, and the specialist annotation discusses a possible model in Lord Northcliffe. “Possible model” is the careful formulation: a fictional publisher’s behaviour should not be presented as a transcript of a real person’s acts. Tilbury’s business appetite supplies one of the forces that could bring Galahad’s memoir into print. The comic contest becomes sharper because the family’s wish to suppress recollections and a publisher’s wish to exploit them are both understandable within their own priorities.
Personality and relationships
Galahad has the memoir and a memory of people who would prefer it unpublished. Lady Constance and Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe have reasons to fear its contents. Percy Pilbeam moves through related business and investigative circles; one should check the individual book rather than assuming that every returning professional appears in every Tilbury scene. Clarence is interested in a quieter corner of Blandings, while the manuscript makes the house unusually attractive to a commercial visitor.
Heavy Weather is the major Blandings stop. Service with a Smile brings Tilbury back to the castle at a later stage, and Frozen Assets is another independent Wodehouse novel with his presence, issued in the United States as Biffen’s Millions. These are crossovers and returns, not volumes of a single Tilbury serial. The book pages distinguish regional titles and printings. A man who sees value in a manuscript can travel between fictional worlds without making their original publication histories identical.
